S.T.E.M. Winners!

This year’s SD 85 S.T.E.M. challenge for our 200 students was for each team to create 2 tools to assess the general health, biodiversity and stock assessment for the Quatse River Estuary. Each team was given a package consisting of red solo cups, paint sticks, rope, tape, elastics, etc. Out of the 39 teams who attended (1 from Gold River!) three teams came out on top:

Top Design: Fort Rupert Elementary School
Most Innovative Design: Seaview Elementary School
Top Overall Winner: A. J. Elliott Elementary School

The iPad was won by Sydney from Gwa’sala-‘Nakwaxda’xw School, and the Bose speaker was won by Kieran from Fort Rupert Elementary.

We want to thank our sponsors and donors for their contributions to make this such a success, and to the industry professional judges who took time out of their busy day to support and choose our winners.

Litter Warriors!

These students spent some time on their lunch break making our school more beautiful.

S.T.E.M. Day 2017

Our STEM day was a huge success. Seven different schools from across our district came together to use supplies to build a water catchment and sprinkler system for a school garden.
Top Overall Design award went to one of the teams from Eagle View which included; Cayden Drake, Damon Renwall, Bailey Shea, Abby McCorquodale and Alexander. This team’s design included a moveable collection system that could be hung from various locations including the gutters on a house in order to capture the most amount of water available. This team also built in filters, water storage and distribution through long plastic tubing that could be buried underground if desired.

Most Innovative Design award went to a team from Sunset which included; Riley Brady , Joe Rocchio, Evan Wighton, Kaisuan Llewllyn, and William Grant. This teams design was well rounded with use of water barrels and large surface area for catchment and storage. The key innovation this group made was to account for collecting water that had passed through the root system in order to re-use it for future watering events. Truly innovative thinking!

Top Overall School award was given to Alert Bay Elementary School as all of their teams had very strong designs which were well represented. This is a testatment to school teachers and leaders who have worked very hard to prepare the students for this event.

Stay tuned to find out if and when any of the groups will implement these water collection designs in their school gardens.
